KELOWNA UNITED vs TSS - AN ENTERTAINING ENCOUNTER

July 4, 2010 - By Jan Prochazka

On Saturday the 3rd of July Kelowna United Women's PCSL Reserve squared off against the top ranked, undefeated TSS Academy at Kettle Valley soccer field for a game in the PCSL Women's Reserve U-21 league.

The game started with good passing combinations from TSS, but Kelowna United held its ground and should have scored early on from a few very good scoring opportunities! Most of the half was played and battled in the midfield with both teams combining and trying to find the space behind the other team's defense. The half ended goal less, even though both teams tested the goalies with a couple of great shots each!

In the second half TSS came out with a fury and hit the same post three times within a ten minute span. Kelowna United goalkeeper played superbly in goal and denied TSS from a go-ahead goal on a couple of occasions. Kelowna counter attacked wisely and should have scored from a Holly Grover break away or from connecting on two corner kicks, but toward the last 15 minutes of the game, it was still a tie.
On 78 minutes, Kelowna United won the ball in midfield and linked up with striker Kenzie Byrnes whose shot was surpassed in the goal by a 30- yard follow up run from Kelowna's leading goal scorer Bailey D'Amato for an easy tap-in. 1-0 Kelowna United. Upon this goal TSS played a more direct soccer game which almost resulted in a few break aways. TSS was however denied every time by a hard fighting defense anchored by Pernilla Erikson and Andrea Bergg who helped goalie Zoe Walter record the season's first shutout!  The entire team deserves credit with a mention of Jenessa Moore, who  added another stellar performance in midfield.

In summary, an entertaining encounter with two teams who both could have won the game. This time the marginals were on Kelowna United's side, who won its second game of the season. Last chance to watch the team this season will be on Saturday the 10th of July when Kelowna United closes out its home schedule with a game against Semiahmoo at the UBCO turf at 3 PM.
