Life for Len

July 3, 2010 - By Lorna Howes

His surprised delight was priceless! At a gathering of League directors, friends and family at Northview Golf and Country Club in Surrey on June 30th, Len McAdams was granted Life Membership of the Pacific Coast Soccer League (PCSL).

This event honoured Len for his 27 years service to the League and marked the handing over of the reins to new president, Dave Collard.

Since 1983 Len has, with typical Irish humour and persistence, led, cajoled, and supported fellow directors, clubs, coaches, managers, and players, insisting on the continued success of this 73 year old league.

Only those who take on such roles as volunteers in our communities know the dedication required to ensure the smooth running of a soccer league that encompasses events all over BC, Washington State and Oregon.

Len has been supported by his wife, Yvonne and all his family as well as a team of directors who became friends. His firm hand at the helm began to fail when he was struck with Parkinson’s disease; that hand might be slower but his mind and wit are as sharp as ever.

There are children now playing in the PCSL whose parents or grandparents played. There are currently thirty-five teams in four divisions, premier and U-21 men’s and women’s playing all across BC. Players from this league have moved on to national squads as well as the Vancouver Whitecaps and university teams.

For those who had the pleasure of witnessing last night’s surprise presentation, Len’s commitment was a reminder lesson on many levels; loyal friends and commitment to a dream, purposeful work and team support provide one with ingredients for a life enjoyed fully.

Len had a relatively small group around him last night but knows there are hundreds of soccer players and former players who will all raise a glass to his lifetime achievement.

PCSL President Dave Collard presented Len with an inscribed glass plaque which reads: "Presented to Len McAdams in Recognition of his Dedication to the P.C.S.L.  Serving as President From 1983 To 2010.  P.C.S.L. Thank You, and Appoint you with a Life Membership with the Honorary Title of Past President.

Len was taken by complete surprise upon entering the room as he knew nothing of the event and had been lured to the venue on a false premise. Len's wife Yvonne looks on with delight at Len's obvious pleasure.
